Have you ever had french toast? Have you ever had Cap’n Crunch? Have you ever had them together??? Well let me tell you where you can and its freaking amazing!! The Baltimore breakfast staple, Blue Moon Cafe is where my oldest son, daughter and I selected to have a little family time over breakfast yesterday and per usual, it satisfied each taste bud individually and as a whole.
The Vibe:
Blue Moon Cafe has been dishing us breakfast meals since ’96 on Aliceanna Street in Fells point. Although they have just recently opened a pretty new and larger location in Federal Hill, the family and I still opted to go to the original. Its a small dining space that seats maybe (I’m estimating here because I didn’t actually count) 25- 30 people. However, you’re seated comfortably. I guess you can say you get the diner feel but I moreso get the “I stopped past my friends’ home for a little conversation over a good meal” feel. My favorite thing about the space is I know Ill catch a good eyeful of new art (Look past the cute kids above to see the current art that reflects the upcoming October festivities). It changes, so it never gets boring. If you go on the weekend for brunch, expect to wait…outside, but you’ll be in good company of other Baltimoreans and visitors alike and usually end up with some good time passing conversation in the meantime, maybe even a new friend. Run in and grab a cinnaroll to munch on while you wait if your hunger is more impatient than you are, because this breakfast is worth the wait.

The Food:
You read where I said it satisfied each taste bud individually and in unison right? lol yea. All facts. Heres what I can vouch for…the Cap’n Crunch French Toast!, which this cafes’ owner IS the original creator of. The Mexican Scramble is something to write home about, okay! Try that! and the Sweet Baby Jesus! Thats what the meal is called “Sweet Baby Jesus”. I have never asked but I pretty much assume when they came up with this dish, ” Sweet Baby Jesus” was the verbalization of how good it tasted and they went along with that as the name. This dish is hash browns, tomatoes, lump crab meat, eggs, melted cheese and hollandaise sauce. Did I mention that I am one of those people that does not like for their food to touch. I am…yet I LOVE this dish! All of the dishes are great portion sizes and leave you full for quite a while. The meal meets the buck.
I love the consistency of this place. I have my spells where I go twice a week, once a month or once every few months. Regardless of the gap in time since my last visit, the food preparation and taste alike is consistent. For that reason alone this is my go to spot when we have visitors in town and I want to give them a taste of the Baltimore life. I don’t have to question if they are going to let me down after I’ve hyped them up. So go, take your out of town family or catch up with a friend over a savory #BadAssBreakfast in the heart of our beautiful city! Xo.
